The National Botanical Garden, Dr. Rafael María Mosoco, was founded with the purpose of studying, conserving and managing the diverse and rich flora of the Dominican Republic, created by Law 456 of 1976 and inaugurated on August 15 of the same year. It bears the name of Dr. Rafael María Moscoso as a posthumous tribute to the first Dominican botanist who wrote a catalog on the flora of the Spanish Island in 1943. Its emblem is a Guanito Leaf (Coccothrinax argentea), a thin palm that is very abundant in the garden.
